If you\u2019re ready to start a similar adventure, there&#8217;s no need for concern. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London life before your studies at Imperial, enabling you to really appreciate your new urban experience.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re arriving weeks ahead or just prior to the term, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First things first: find housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To sidestep expensive hotel fees, arrange your accommodations promptly. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t, as the top choices are grabbed quickly. Try to locate a residence close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Life administration: addressing the crucial necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After you arrive in London, focus on the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 International scholars need a dependable, budget-friendly method to send money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 Navigating new surroundings without data can be tough. Get a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after your arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account establishment \u2013 Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and suitable for students. Open an account for everyday expenses and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 This allows entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. It&#8217;s the perfect time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore more than 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re introverted, strive to engage. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week sets the tone for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel intelligently<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus system, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Don\u2019t repeat my mistake\u2014get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and unearth hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify your cozy spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a favorite place to go is beneficial\u2014mine is a nearby park where I unwind. My second spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Discover your own comfort zones, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas provide a chance to decompress and refresh.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And remember to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Become acquainted with the areas you frequently visit around campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee locations.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks and the city during the weekends. Check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will stem from those moments when you get a little lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final pointers before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Get a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t stand up to the wind.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in unique events \u2013 they provide great anecdotes.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s typical at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial.
