The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate before beginning your journey at Imperial, making the most of your new life in the city.

No matter if you arrive early or just before classes commence, here’s the advice I wish I’d gotten on my first day.

First things first: secure your housing

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the prime options disappear quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning lectures.

Life admin: sorting out the essential items

As soon as you arrive, focus on the following:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective method to move money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away to prevent getting disoriented without data in a new setting.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer speedy and student-friendly services. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job income.

Student ID card – crucial for entering campus buildings, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Collect it at your earliest convenience.

The initial week at Imperial is the most vital

Your first week at Imperial is fundamental for your student experience. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Dive into Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society displays. Your first week lays the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I didn’t quite grasp the Tube or buses and ended up traversing nine kilometers on foot across London. It was an unforgettable, albeit chaotic, experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Nonetheless, walking remains the best way to soak up the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a go-to spot makes a difference – mine is a nearby park where I escape daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another favorite venue for enjoying a movie.

Discover your own comfort spots, whether a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to rejuvenate and relax.

And remember to explore!

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride on a red double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from a little wandering!

Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life

Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against wind.

Participate in unique events – they make for memorable anecdotes.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to take in.
