Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The metropolis appeared immense, bustling, and full of energy. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s how to set your life in London straight before you start at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive early or just in time for the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had.<\/p>\n

Locate Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Arrange for your place to stay as soon as possible to dodge pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Try to find a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to simplify those early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative Essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Take care of these key items shortly after landing in London:<\/p>\n

  • Funds transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a dependable method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly for data and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. You\u2019ll require an account for transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for getting into campus facilities, libraries, and securing student discounts. Acquire yours at the earliest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The first week holds great significance. It’s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential allies. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, urge yourself to join in. I found close friends during spontaneous tours and society stalls. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigating London: Smart Travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I covered nine kilometers through London due to my confusion with public transportation. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower Tube and bus fares. Walking is still excellent for uncovering hidden treasures throughout the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be daunting. Seek out a comforting location, such as a local park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it\u2019s a park close to my home and the O2 for films.<\/p>\n

    Be Adventurous!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, complimentary museums, and savor unplanned strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost.<\/p>\n

    • Feelings of confusion are normal; don\u2019t stress if you feel lost initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re perusing this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I started. Breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
