Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot. The metropolis appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t be concerned. Here’s how to acclimate to life in London prior to your start at Imperial, ensuring you relish your new city experience.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Find housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your accommodation early to circumvent costly hotel stays. I was fortunate, but not everyone is. Opt for a location close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid extended traveling times.<\/p>\n

Administrative matters: essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Quickly sort these necessary items:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a dependable method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one without delay to stay in touch.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly towards students. You’ll require an account for transactions and part-time employment.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 it provides access to campus amenities and discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is essential for your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies.<\/p>\n

    Even if shyness holds you back, attempt to get involved. I made lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. This week will lay the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers. Don’t follow my lead. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more budget-friendly travel.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures in London.<\/p>\n

    Identify your cozy spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be a lot to take in. Discover a comforting spot such as a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    For me, it\u2019s the park near my residence and the O2 for films. Locate your own places for solace.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to dining locations.<\/p>\n

    Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from venturing out without any itinerary.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into Imperial life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag to avert charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective in the wind.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented; this is typical at the outset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
