Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, stay calm. Here’s how to acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to relish your new life in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First priority: find accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by securing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent long travels for early morning lectures.

Crucial life administrative tasks

Upon arriving in London, promptly tackle these necessities:

Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps such as Wise or Revolut for economical money transfers.

UK SIM card – vital for navigation and communication; purchase one right after arriving.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. Set up an account for handling transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – essential for gaining access to campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it without delay.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your first week is essential for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in; I developed close friendships during campus tours and society displays. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Intelligent travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometre trek across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel intense, so discover a comfort zone. Mine is a local park for daily unwinding, and the O2 for weekly film nights. Your comfort zone may be a cafe, bookstore, or bench by the river. It’s priceless for relaxation.

Discover the city!

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home, including supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining options. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a double-decker bus ride for the sights. Many of your fondest memories will emerge from spontaneous adventures.

Final advice before immersing yourself in Imperial life

Bring a reusable bag to avoid paying for disposable ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket since umbrellas don’t work well in strong winds.

Participate in unusual events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t fret if you feel directionless at first; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure with one bus ride and a trip to Tesco at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London was initially daunting due to its size and rapid tempo.
