With only a suitcase and Google Maps as my guide, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar circumstance, there’s no need to panic. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to life in London before you begin your studies at Imperial, so you can savor your new city experience.

Whether you come weeks ahead of schedule or just before the semester starts, here’s what I wish I had known when I first arrived.

Secure Accommodation First

Prevent expensive hotel costs by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to simplify those early morning travels.

Key Administrative Tasks

As soon as you arrive, focus on these important tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, discover an economical way to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide appealing exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Make sure to obtain a UK SIM card quickly for data access to navigate.

Bank Account Setup – Consider digital banks like Monzo or Starling; they’re efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your initial week is crucial for connecting with flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to investigate over 350 student-led organizations and clubs. Even if you’re a bit introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and at society booths. This week will shape your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, which led me to trek nine kilometers across London. Don’t follow my example. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to lower your travel costs. Nevertheless, walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems in the city.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

Initially, London can feel emotionally intense. Finding a comforting location is beneficial. I frequent a local park daily to unwind. Another favorite of mine is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I enjoy a movie weekly. Seek out your own comfort places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Get to know the common spots around your campus and residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee spots. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your best experiences will arise from wandering around a bit!

Final Recommendations Before Joining Imperial

Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket since umbrellas don’t withstand strong winds.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost initially; that’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you are reading this, you’re already better prepared than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying-to-imperial/" rel

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially quite daunting due to its enormity and rapid pace.
