Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed massive, bustling, and incredibly fast-paced. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there\u2019s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to ease your transition into your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can savor your time in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you are arriving weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It’s wise to arrange for accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I got lucky, but not everyone does, as the prime options get snatched up quickly. Try to find a place close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Essentials of Life Admin<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As soon as you arrive, tackle these fundamental tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly to help navigate the city.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 While some banks ask for a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and future pals. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re not outgoing, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society events. This week sets the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Smart Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I hadn\u2019t grasped the Tube or bus systems, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable experience but also quite hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on Tube and bus rides.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden gems.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense. Finding a comfort spot is beneficial. For me, that includes the park near my home and the O2 for watching films. Seek out your own refuges, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9 or a bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and your residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and roam without a strict plan. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from moments of wandering a little off course.<\/p>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees associated with single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don\u2019t hold up well in windy conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Join unusual events for stories you\u2019ll cherish.<\/li>\n
    • Do not stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
