The city appeared immense, bustling, and dynamic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was at a loss for where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t stress. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just in time for term, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

First thing’s first: secure your accommodation

By organizing your housing early, you can steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune as top choices vanish quickly. Try to find a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Managing life admin: taking care of the essentials

After you arrive in London, promptly tackle these necessities:

Money transfers – as an international student, consider using apps like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective transfers from your home country.

UK SIM card – obtain one quickly for data access and navigation in a new location.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly towards students. An account is necessary for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is key

Your first week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I forged some of my closest friendships during random campus tours and at society booths. Your first week establishes the framework for your university journey.

Mastering London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was hectic but unforgettable. Don’t make my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfortable spaces

At first, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting spot is beneficial. For me, it’s a park near my residence where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to de-stress.

Discover your own cozy spots, whether that be a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

And remember to explore!

Become acquainted with your new environment around campus and home. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.

Take time to visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and meander without a set plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost!

Final thoughts before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – shops tend to charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.

Participate in unusual events – they provide great stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything figured out right away. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

<footer class="imp-post__footer

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting.
