Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in settling into London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your fresh start in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive several weeks prior or just before the semester starts, here\u2019s the counsel I wished I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First and foremost: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prevent costly hotel bills by organizing housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that same fortune, as the top choices tend to disappear quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative essentials: taking care of the basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019re in London, focus on these essential tasks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method for transferring funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one promptly to avoid being without internet for navigation in a new city.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 while some banks need a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily transactions and part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 critical for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The initial week at Imperial is crucial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage actively in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-run clubs and societies, and dive into your interests.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re on the shy side, attempt to participate. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I struggled to understand the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable experience but also chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy inexpensive travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains the most effective way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you\u2019ll uncover by wandering.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel emotionally intense initially. Having a comforting location helps \u2013 mine is a local park I visit daily for some relaxation. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch movies each week.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own comforting spots, such as a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a park bench, to unwind and rejuvenate.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And don\u2019t forget to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and your living space. Seek out nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for a scenic view. Some of your finest memories will stem from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final tips before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Acquire a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.<\/li>\n<li>Embrace unusual events \u2013 they lead to great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone does initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial.
