The city seemed vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to face this experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to settle in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can make the most of your new city life.

Whether you’re arriving ahead of time or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation First

Prevent costly hotel charges by booking accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. Search for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Crucial Life Administration

Once you’re in London, focus on these important tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, discover an economical option for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Acquire one right away for data access and navigation.

Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and friendly to students. Open an account for transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your first week is crucial for meeting flatmates, classmates, and forging friendships. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I made close friends during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with understanding the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. Don’t make the same mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can be overwhelming. Having a go-to spot is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favorite for catching movies. Identify your own places like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench to relax.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and home. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Tour famous landmarks, free museums, and relish a double-decker bus ride. Some of your most cherished memories will be formed through spontaneous explorations.

Final Recommendations for Beginning at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket for blustery, rainy days.

Participate in unusual events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be concerned if you feel lost at first; it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged Student Blogs

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was intimidating.
