Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to get acclimatized to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.

No matter if you arrive several weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Housing

Prevent high hotel fees by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone will be. Opt for a location close to campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to early classes.

Essential Administrative Tasks

Take care of these essential tasks right after you land in London:

Money Transfers – International students require economical methods for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain one right away for data access and navigation.

Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for day-to-day expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – Vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and receiving student discounts. Make sure to collect it quickly.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re timid, challenge yourself to get involved; it sets the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting Around London

In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to my limited knowledge of the Tube and buses. Avoid repeating my mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. However, walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Favorite Spots

London can be daunting. Locate a comforting space, such as a local park, café, bookstore, or bench by the river, to unwind and recharge.

Discover!

Get acquainted with nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a journey on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering and occasionally getting lost.

Additional Advice

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are futile against the wind.

Participate in unique events; they create great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; everyone experiences it at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time, the sheer size and energy of the city left me feeling daunted.
