When I first landed in London, the sheer size, noise, and speed were quite daunting. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s a guide to help you get settled in London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace the experience of your new city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here are the tips I wish I’d had when I got here.<\/p>\n

Top priority: find a place to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent expensive hotel bills by securing your accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone gets the same fortune, as the prime spots vanish quickly. Seek a location close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to sidestep lengthy travels for early classes.<\/p>\n

Critical life administrative tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After arriving in London, tackle these important tasks immediately:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Acquire one right away for mobile data and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students, making them essential for payments and part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 This card provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The significance of the first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It\u2019s the ideal time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Efficient travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I covered nine kilometers on foot throughout London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable experience, albeit chaotic. Make sure to get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking is still the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. Uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London may initially seem emotionally intense. Having a comfort spot is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. The O2, just a short 10-minute walk away, is another place where I relax weekly while catching a movie.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own favorite places, whether a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to chill and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Venture around the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with the areas you will frequently visit around campus and your home. Find nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to dining or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from those moments of getting a little lost!<\/p>\n

    Helpful advice before diving into Imperial life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can be ineffective against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Join unique events \u2013 they lead to the best tales.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 that\u2019s perfectly normal at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There\u2019s no need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I stood when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
