Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in this situation, there’s no need for concern. Here’s a guide to help you settle in London before you begin your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new life in the city.

Regardless of whether you come weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Locate Accommodation

To avoid expensive hotel costs, secure your accommodation well in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that fortune as the prime locations fill up quickly. Try to find a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Essential Administrative Tasks

When you land in London, take care of these important tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card for data and navigation to help you get acquainted with your new environment.

Bank Account – Open a bank account as soon as possible for transactions and payments from part-time jobs. Online banks like Monzo or Starling cater well to students.

Student ID Card – Obtain your student ID to access campus amenities, libraries, and enjoy discounts.

Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential new friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies that align with your interests.

Even if you have a reserved personality, challenge yourself to participate. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society functions. Your first week significantly influences your university experience.

Navigate Smartly in London

At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube and bus systems, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. Avoid my error by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower travel costs.

Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense. Identify a comforting location, be it a park, cafe, or bookstore, to unwind and rejuvenate. My comfort zones include a nearby park and the O2 for my weekly cinema outings.

Discover the City

Get familiar with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining spots.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus to enjoy the sights. Some of your best moments will come from unplanned escapades.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Use a reusable shopping bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Attend unique events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit lost at first; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and trip to Tesco at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

<p class

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially daunting due to its enormity and swift rhythm.
