The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s a guide on how to acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new city lifestyle.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks early or just in time for the term, this advice would have significantly benefited me.

Secure Accommodation First

Prevent high hotel charges by arranging your accommodation early. I was lucky, but many aren’t, since the prime spots get booked quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or an effective Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Important Life Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, make sure to take care of these key tasks:

Currency transfers – International students require cost-effective methods for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – Vital for navigation and connectivity in an unfamiliar city. Obtain one promptly.

Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to join and cater to students. Open an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This allows entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it at the earliest opportunity.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is pivotal for your student life. Get to know your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society events. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with navigating the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to lower travel costs. While walking is a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures, utilize public transport for a more efficient exploration.

Discover Your Relaxation Spots

London can feel a bit much at times. Having a personal retreat is beneficial. Mine is a local park where I like to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another go-to place for catching a movie. Seek out your own venues like a café or a bookstore to unwind and rejuvenate.

Explore the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on an iconic red double-decker bus. Some of the best moments stem from unplanned outings.

Final Advice for Beginning at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid extra fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas won’t hold up in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events to create lasting memories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

<p class

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a bit too much to take in.
