With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to kick off your new life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to truly enjoy the city.

Whether you get here weeks in advance or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing your living arrangements early on. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best options disappear fast, so aim for a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Administrative tasks: vital to handle

Upon your arrival in London, focus on these important tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – crucial for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it quickly.

Your first week at Imperial matters

The initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re on the shy side, challenge yourself to get involved. I built lasting friendships during campus tours and society showcases. This week sets the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting around London: smart travel tips

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across the city. Prevent this by getting a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced fares. Walking, however, remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be a lot to handle. Identify a comforting location, like a nearby park or the O2 for films, where you can relax and recharge. Whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, having a place to unwind is essential.

Investigate the city

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, experience a double-decker bus ride, and wander around aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting lost!

Final pointers before plunging into life at Imperial

Carry a reusable shopping bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas struggle in the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s common at the start.

You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I first arrived in London, it was a bit overwhelming due to its size and speed.
