The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on how to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to fret. Here is some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term starting, here’s the counsel I wish I’d received upon my arrival.

First and foremost: locate a residence

To steer clear of pricey hotel stays, arrange your housing well in advance. I was lucky, but that isn’t the case for everyone, as the top options vanish quickly. Target a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for those early classes.

Administrative tasks: handling the essential necessities

Once you arrive in London, make sure to attend to these necessities right away:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in a new city.

Bank account – while some banks need a UK address, digital options like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – vital for access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is vital

Your first week at Imperial is crucial for shaping your student journey. It’s when you will get acquainted with flatmates, classmates, and future acquaintances. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that spark your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to save on Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures as you roam around.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a go-to place is beneficial – mine is the park close to my home. I frequent it daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I watch movies each week to relax.

Seek out your own havens, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

And don’t forget to discover!

Acquaint yourself with the areas you will frequently visit near campus and home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee haunts.

Visit iconic sights, check out free museums, enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your finest memories will arise from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – retailers often charge for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in the wind.

Participate in unconventional events – they make for excellent stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <strong

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite the experience.
