The atmosphere was bustling, brisk, and slightly daunting. With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I was at a loss about where to start. If you find yourself in this situation, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to fully savor what the city has to offer.

Whether you arrive several weeks before or right at the start of the term, here’s the counsel I wish I’d been given when I first got here.

First things first: secure a place to live

Prevent shelling out hundreds of pounds a night on a hotel by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices get snatched up quickly! Aim to find a place near your campus or at least close to a dependable Tube line – early morning lectures are challenging if you reside over an hour away.

Life admin: getting the necessary essentials in order

Upon your arrival in London, there are several things you ought to handle as soon as you can:

How to send or receive funds – if you’re an international student, you’ll need a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer money from your home nation. Services such as Wise or Revolut saved me from poor exchange rates.

Obtaining a UK SIM card – lacking data means no navigation, which isn’t ideal when you’re in a new location or country! Acquire a UK SIM card and data as soon as you can post-landing.

Establishing a bank account – certain banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Set up a bank account promptly for everyday transactions and to receive payments for any part-time employment while studying.

Collecting your student ID card – this is crucial for accessing campus facilities, utilizing the library, and obtaining student discounts at eateries and retailers. Retrieve your student ID card as soon as possible.

The first week at Imperial is paramount

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. This is when you’ll encounter your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, try to motivate yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest pals during spontaneous campus tours and at various society booths. Your debut week at Imperial sets the stage for the rest of your university experience.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus systems, so I trekked nine kilometers across London to discover the city. It was hectic yet unforgettable – but don’t follow my lead. Obtain your Student Oyster card as soon as possible and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses around London at a lower cost.

That being said, walking is still the most effective way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London has numerous hidden treasures you’ll uncover by simply exploring.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the beginning. Having a comforting location is beneficial – for me, it’s the park located near my residence. I visit daily to relax and recharge. My second comforting location is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movie outings to unwind.

Discover your own places that provide solace in the sprawling city, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river. Having a spot to unwind and refresh is more beneficial than you may realize.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, green spaces, and new favorite spots to grab a meal or coffee.

The iconic landmarks are also worth a visit. Dedicate weekends to uncovering your new city. Visit free museums. Ride a red double-decker bus for the sights. Stroll around without an itinerary. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from moments of getting a bit lost!

<

Composed by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the very first time, the city felt immense.
