Everything felt overwhelmingly fast-paced and noisy, and with only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was at a loss on how to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance on how to acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city fully.

Whether you’re arriving well in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received.

Locate a Place to Stay

Sidestep costly hotel expenses by securing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky in this regard, but not everyone is. Seek a residence close to campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative Tasks: Key Essentials

Upon reaching London, focus on these priorities:

Money Transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM Card – Get one immediately for internet access and navigation in an unfamiliar city.

Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.

Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus, utilizing library resources, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is essential for connecting with flatmates, peers, and future friends. Participate actively in Welcome Week to check out more than 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I forged lasting friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society events. This week will shape your entire university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I struggled to comprehend the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Avoid this mistake by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking is still excellent for uncovering the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can feel a bit too much, so identify a spot that brings you comfort. Mine is a nearby park where I often go to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, where I catch movies weekly. Seek out your own favorite places, such as a café or a bookstore, to relax and recharge.

Get to Know the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining spots. Explore renowned landmarks and museums, and soak in the city’s charm. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from aimless exploration.

Final Recommendations for Beginning at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas fail in windy conditions.

Join unusual events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first; this is completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure step by step.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time, I was struck by its vastness and intensity.
