Arriving in London was initially a lot to take in with its size and rapid pace. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt uncertain about what to do next. If you find yourself in such a situation, don’t stress. Here\u2019s how to get acclimated in London before your classes at Imperial begin, allowing you to fully embrace the experience of being new in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just prior to the semester, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Find a place to stay early to prevent costly hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Try to get accommodations close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Important Life Administrative Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As soon as you arrive, focus on these priorities:<\/p>\n

  • Currency transfers \u2013 International students require cost-effective methods for receiving funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Crucial for data access and navigation in an unfamiliar city. Acquire one without delay.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are prompt and cater well to students. Establish an account for transactions and payments from part-time employment.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 This allows you access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student clubs and organizations. Even if you tend to be reserved, try to engage; I formed strong friendships through campus tours and society booths. This first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Travel Wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable transportation. Walking, however, remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be intense, so seek out a place that brings you comfort. Mine is a nearby park where I unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another preferred spot for movies and relaxation. Identify your own places, such as a cafe or bookstore, where you can take a break in the city.<\/p>\n

    Explore Your Surroundings<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit renowned landmarks, free museums, and indulge in spontaneous strolls. Some of your most memorable experiences will arise from exploring a bit aimlessly.<\/p>\n

    Final Thoughts for Beginning at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective in windy conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Attend quirky events for unforgettable memories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; it\u2019s completely normal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.<\/p>\n
