The city appeared vast, bustling, and fast-paced. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, fret not. Here’s a guide to acclimate to London prior to your time at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wished I had received.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel expenses by organizing your living arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The prime spots get booked quickly! Seek accommodation near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Administrative essentials: organizing the must-haves

Upon your arrival in London, attend to these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide good rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to prevent getting lost without data.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. An account will be necessary for transactions and part-time employment.

Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus areas, libraries, and discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is vital

The first week at Imperial is significant. You’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies.

Even if you’re introverted, aim to get involved. I made close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week sets the stage for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an experience, but not one I’d recommend. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel fares.

Walking remains a great way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can be intense. Locate a comforting area, such as a park, café, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge.

For me, it’s the park near my residence and the O2 for films. These venues help me relax.

And remember to explore!

Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and beloved eateries.

Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and absorb the city. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from spontaneous outings.

Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life

Acquire a reusable bag – stores impose charges for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty weather.

Engage in unique events – they often lead to great stories.

Don’t worry if you feel a bit lost – it’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one step at a time.

To learn more about my journey, check out my story at Imperial.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.im

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time felt overwhelming.
