The city appeared immense, bustling, and energetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re preparing for a similar journey, there’s no need for concern. Here are some tips to assist you in adjusting to London before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you can truly relish your new environment.

Whether you arrive several weeks early or just before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had upon my arrival.

First Priority: Secure Housing

Steer clear of expensive hotel accommodations by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime locations disappear quickly. Try to find a place near your campus or an efficient Tube line to facilitate those early morning journeys.

Crucial Administrative Tasks

When you arrive in London, focus on these essential tasks:

Money transfers – For students from overseas, services like Wise or Revolut provide economical exchange rates for transferring funds from home.

UK SIM card – Make sure you have data for navigation by securing a UK SIM card as soon as possible.

Bank account establishment – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly, perfect for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This is vital for gaining access to campus amenities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is essential for your university experience. It’s the opportunity to connect with flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Challenge yourself to get involved, even if you feel timid. I met some of my closest companions during spontaneous campus tours and society gatherings. This week sets the foundation for your university adventure.

Smart Traveling in London

During my initial week, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally overwhelming at first. It’s helpful to find a comfort zone – mine is a local park where I relax daily. The O2, just ten minutes away, is another venue where I unwind weekly with a film.

Discover your own soothing spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These areas provide a vital escape to unwind and recharge.

Explore and Uncover

Get to know the commonly visited neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots.

Explore iconic sights, check out free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Many of your fondest memories will arise from unplanned adventures!

Last Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas do not work well in strong winds.

Be open to unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first – it’s a typical experience.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<p class="imp-post

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was an intense experience.
