Many facets of studying at Imperial have pleasantly surprised me, diverging from my initial assumptions. Here are five unexpected aspects of studying at Imperial.

1. Imperial is more global and inclusive than I expected

I originally believed that the student population would primarily comprise UK students, which made me feel somewhat alien as an international student. However, Imperial is exceptionally international, featuring students with varied cultural and academic backgrounds from around the globe.

The diversity feels routine in day-to-day life, with constant engagement with differing viewpoints enriching the learning experience. This creates an ambiance at Imperial that is both global and inviting.

2. PhD life includes ongoing classroom education

I presumed a PhD would entail a focus exclusively on research, but there are plenty of avenues for structured education.

Opportunities include sessions on teaching, research methods, presentation techniques, and programming. Specializing in Transport within Civil Engineering, I participated in classes with Transport Master’s students, which enhanced my foundational knowledge. I was not expecting the extent of coursework and training in PhD life, which I have found immensely beneficial.

3. More roles than simply “student”

I was taken aback by the variety of roles I could embrace alongside my studies. I had anticipated a concentration on research and academics, but there are numerous ways to engage beyond that.

Besides my PhD, I’ve held positions as a graduate teaching assistant, student content creator, and student ambassador, each offering a unique perspective on university life. Teaching has bolstered my confidence in conveying ideas, while content creation and ambassadorial duties have enabled me to connect with broader audiences and impact the student community differently. Being an Imperial student is not a one-dimensional identity.

4. South Kensington is more than just a campus site

I didn’t foresee the South Kensington Campus becoming such a pivotal part of my student experience. Initially, I regarded it merely as the university’s location, but it contributes significantly to daily life at Imperial.

After classes or meetings, there are countless local spots to explore, including museums, parks, cafés, or restaurants. It’s simple to relax, spend quality time with friends, or recharge after a lengthy day. This equilibrium is essential, particularly during hectic times. South Kensington is integral to my experience of student life.

5. PhD students are more engaged in societies than I anticipated

I believed that societies were chiefly for undergraduates and that PhD students would be too occupied to partake, but that’s far from the truth!

I became part of the Cheerleading and Chinese Drama Society, meeting other PhD students who are actively involved in societies. This shifted my perception of postgraduate life, demonstrating that even while pursuing a PhD, individuals can dedicate time to hobbies, friendships, and community beyond their research. This enhances the experience and contributes to a more well-rounded student life.

Reflecting on my journey at Imperial, I recognize it’s never been solely about academics. Study and research hold importance, but so do the individuals, the myriad roles one can assume, the opportunities for learning, and the life created around the campus. These unforeseen aspects are what I value the most now.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under postgraduate student life, sports and societies

Tagged Imperial student life, student life, <a href="https://

Authored by Judy, PhD Civil Engineering “What astonishes me most about my studies at Imperial is that it transcends mere academics – it revolves around the people, the various roles one can adopt, the endless opportunities for ongoing learning, and the life cultivated around the campus.” Having earned my undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at…

[1

post-374049","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
