Many elements of studying at Imperial were quite different from what I had envisioned – in a good way! Here are five unexpected findings I had while studying at Imperial.

1. Imperial is more global and welcoming than I imagined

Prior to my arrival at Imperial, I believed the student population would mainly be composed of UK students, and as an international student, I might feel somewhat alienated. However, my actual experience has been completely the reverse. Imperial provides a highly international atmosphere where you encounter students from around the globe, each with their unique cultural and academic experiences.

The most astonishing element was just how natural this diversity seems in daily life. You’re continually surrounded by individuals with varying viewpoints, which merges into your learning journey. It makes Imperial not only international but also inclusive and inviting.

2. PhD life does not signify the end of classroom education

I previously thought that undertaking a PhD meant an end to classes and a sole emphasis on research. I didn’t anticipate encountering so many structured learning opportunities.

If you wish, you can engage in sessions on teaching, research development, presentation abilities, and programming. Although I remained in Civil Engineering for my PhD, I advanced my specialization into the Transport field. This permitted me to attend classes with Transport Master’s students, further enhancing my knowledge in the area. I had not expected PhD life to encompass so many opportunities for learning through courses and training, which I have truly appreciated.

3. You can embrace roles beyond just “student”

Another revelation was the spectrum of roles I could undertake alongside my studies. I anticipated that life at Imperial would fundamentally revolve around research, deadlines, and scholarly duties, but in practice, there are numerous pathways to engage beyond this realm.

Alongside my PhD, I’ve served as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA), a student content creator, and a student ambassador, each role providing a different insight into university life at Imperial. Teaching enhances my confidence in articulating ideas clearly, while content creation and ambassador roles present opportunities to engage with broader audiences and contribute to the student community in alternate ways. It opened my eyes to the realization that being an Imperial student embodies more than just one rigid identity.

4. South Kensington is more than simply the location of one of the campuses

I had not anticipated that being situated at the South Kensington Campus would evolve into such a significant part of my student experience. Initially, I viewed it merely as the geographical location of the university, but over time, I recognized that the area enriches daily life at Imperial.

After lectures or meetings, there are numerous venues nearby to discover, be it museums, parks, cafés, or eateries. It’s simple to take a stroll, spend time with friends, or just unwind after a demanding day. That equilibrium makes a substantial difference, especially during hectic times. South Kensington is not only where I engage in studies – it’s an integral part of my student experience.

5. PhD students are more engaged in societies than I anticipated

I had presumed that societies primarily catered to undergraduates and that PhD students would be too preoccupied or disconnected to genuinely participate, but I was taken aback to realize that this is far from the truth!

I joined the Cheerleading and Chinese Drama Society, and through their events and activities, I encountered other PhD students who were also actively engaged in societies. This significantly altered my view of postgraduate life. I began to see that even amid a PhD, individuals still find time for interests, friendships, and communities outside their research. I believe that is a truly valuable aspect, making student life feel remarkably well-rounded.

Reflecting on my experiences, what surprised me most about studying at Imperial is that it has never been solely about academics. Naturally, study and research are a…

Authored by Judy, PhD Civil Engineering “What astonishes me most about my time at Imperial is that it transcends mere academics – it’s about the individuals, the various roles you can embrace, the chances for continuous learning, and the life you cultivate around the campus.” Having finished my undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at Imperial…

[1

post-373751","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
