The realization that you have one significant opportunity can be quite intimidating. I experienced similar feelings when I applied for my MSc Business Analytics program, so here’s a resource on the application journey and how to make the most of it.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This is an important choice, particularly if you’re aiming for Imperial Business School, as you can apply to only one Master’s program per cycle. Consider what you wish to explore beyond your previous studies and how the program can aid in clarifying your passions and trajectory. In my final year of BSc Business Analytics, I had a grounding in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to pursue this path without reiterating earlier content or confining myself prematurely. The flexibility of Imperial’s course structure and module options appealed to me. The modules offered insights into areas such as logistics, supply chain analytics, analytics leadership, and solving business challenges, which aligned well with my ambitions and interests.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, my goal was to work as a business intelligence analyst, though I wasn’t fixed on a particular industry. I had diverse interests and wished to investigate them before securing a full-time position. Studying at Imperial and engaging in various modules and methodologies enabled me to discern what suited me best, steering me towards analytics in the FMCG sector. This process of exploration was enlightening and equally important as acquiring technical skills.

Entry Standards for the Master’s Program

The entry standards can appear daunting, especially given Imperial’s esteemed status. I suggest aligning your experiences with the requirements of the course. I found that I met a majority of the prerequisites through my undergraduate education. Master’s programs don’t expect you to be a specialist; rather, you should articulate how you intend to utilize your skills and knowledge effectively. Comprehending the course expectations can make the entry requirements seem more attainable and less off-putting.

A significant portion of my anxiety arose from misconceptions instead of genuine requirements. Examining the course details and aligning your experiences with the prerequisites can reveal you are better prepared than anticipated.

English Language Proficiencies

International applicants ought to consider the English language requirements, as you might need to undertake an assessment like the IELTS based on where you obtained your degree. I did not require additional testing since I pursued my studies in the UK. If you must fulfill English language requirements, Imperial offers Pre-sessional courses to assist with your academic English proficiency.

Composing Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquiry, and eagerness to learn provide a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t obsess over crafting perfect responses!”

Many individuals attempt to present their experiences flawlessly, which can lead to overly polished answers. Make good use of your experiences. I dedicated considerable time to my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, reasons for selecting Imperial, and how my previous experiences relate to my objectives.

Documenting everything I engaged in during my undergraduate studies was beneficial, encompassing modules, projects, societies, and volunteer work. I reflected on my data visualization efforts, interest in media and AI, and leadership roles, all of which shaped my perspective on analytics. I connected these experiences to each question, steering clear of clichéd phrases. Rather than stating ‘I am passionate about data,’ I highlighted specific projects and experiences, detailing their impact on my interests and objectives.

Being genuine and expressive is crucial, yet avoid excessive embellishment. Responses that come across as overly refined or generic diminish value. I made a record of experiences, lessons learned, and missteps, then drafted and refined my statement incorporating fresh ideas. My responses fell into place organically. Seek feedback from a trusted individual on your personal statement for new insights and suggestions for improvement.

Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn offer a competitive edge, so don’t be overly concerned with achieving perfection in your answers!

Selecting References for Your Application

Strategically select referees, as the impact of your references relies on how well they know you and your contributions. I chose one referee based on shared genuine interests and another based on academic and career aspirations. One was a professor who instructed me in media and AI, an area of interest for me, while the other was my professor in data visualization, aligning

Authored by Priyal (India), MSc Business Analytics (Online) If you are contemplating an application to Imperial, this choice is likely far from arbitrary and is something you have been striving towards.
