The pressure of having a single opportunity can be quite intense. I experienced this when applying for my MSc Business Analytics, so here’s a guide for effectively navigating the application journey.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This decision is the most critical in the application journey, especially since you can submit an application to only one Master’s program at Imperial Business School each cycle. Reflect on what you wish to dive into beyond your prior studies and how the program correlates with your passions and ambitions. Throughout my BSc in Business Analytics, I established a solid grounding in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to continue in this domain without revisiting previous content or limiting my options prematurely. The flexible module structure of Imperial’s course appealed to me, offering insights into new fields such as logistics, supply chain analytics, and leadership, which resonated with my aspirations.

During my undergraduate studies, I aspired to be a business intelligence analyst but wasn’t tied to a specific industry. I wanted to explore a variety of sectors before settling into a full-time position. Attending Imperial aided me in identifying what suited me best, leading me toward FMCG analytics. This exploration brought clarity and was just as important as the technical skills acquired.

Grasping Master’s Course Admission Criteria

Admission criteria might seem intimidating, particularly given Imperial’s status. Evaluate your background against the program requirements. I discovered that I met many of the criteria through my undergraduate studies. Master’s programs do not expect complete expertise; they seek to understand how you’ll apply and enhance your skills. Familiarity with the requirements can make them seem more attainable.

Much of my anxiety stemmed from assumptions rather than actual stipulations. A thorough examination of the course webpage and aligning your background with the requirements can uncover that you are more prepared than you previously realized.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

International applicants should take into account the English language proficiency standards. Depending on your previous institution, you may be required to take assessments like IELTS. I didn’t need any extra evaluations since I studied in the UK. If necessary, Imperial provides Pre-sessional courses to enhance your academic English skills.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and openness to learning give you a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t worry about achieving perfection!”

Many strive to depict their experiences flawlessly, but this can come off as insincere. Leverage your experiences to your benefit. I dedicated considerable time to my personal statement, contemplating my career direction, motivations for selecting Imperial, and the connections between my past experiences and future goals.

I documented everything I accomplished during my undergraduate studies, including modules, projects, and extracurricular activities. I pondered on my data visualization projects, enthusiasm for media and AI, and leadership roles. I directly associated these experiences with each question, shunning generic claims. Instead of stating ‘I am passionate about data,’ I emphasized specific projects and how they influenced my interests and objectives.

Being genuine and expressive is crucial, but refrain from being excessively descriptive. Generic or overly polished responses provide little substance. I recorded my experiences, lessons learned, and missteps, then refined my draft gradually. Seeking feedback from a trusted individual can yield valuable perspectives.

Your uniqueness, curiosity, and desire to learn are your assets, so don’t worry about being flawless!

Obtaining References for Your Application

Select your referees intentionally, based on how well they know you and your work. I chose one referee based on my interests and another based on my academic and professional trajectory. One was a professor who instructed me in media and AI, a subject I’m enthusiastic about, while the other was my professor in data visualization, aligning with my career focus. This combination showcased both my passion and academic abilities.

I approached both referees before including them in

Authored by Priyal (India), MSc Business Analytics (Online) Pursuing admission to Imperial is frequently a thoughtfully made choice, rather than a chance one.
