The realization that you have just one opportunity to apply can be quite intimidating. I experienced the same pressure when I applied for my MSc in Business Analytics. Here’s a guide to help you through the application process and enhance your chances.

Selecting Your Master’s Course

This is an essential decision, particularly if you’re applying to Imperial Business School, where you can submit an application for only one Master’s program per admissions cycle. Look beyond your previous studies and consider what you’re eager to delve into. Think about how the course can enrich your comprehension of your interests and career trajectory. When I submitted my application, I was finishing my BSc in Business Analytics, having established a groundwork in analytical tools and explored entrepreneurship. I aimed to advance in this domain without repeating content or limiting my options too early. The structure of Imperial’s course, featuring flexible module selections, attracted me. It presented opportunities to engage with areas such as logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership in analytics, and business problem-solving, aligning with my aspirations and interests.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I intended to become a business intelligence analyst but wasn’t fixed on a particular industry. I sought to investigate various sectors before dedicating myself to a full-time position. Studying at Imperial and interacting with diverse modules and analytical methods allowed me to recognize my inclination towards fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) analytics. This exploration clarified my path and was equally valuable as the technical skills I acquired.

Grasping Master’s Course Admission Criteria

The admission criteria can seem daunting, especially considering Imperial’s prestigious reputation. I suggest contrasting your experiences against the course criteria. I discovered that I fulfilled most of them through my undergraduate studies. Master’s programs don’t expect mastery in all areas; instead, they want to see how you’ll leverage your existing skills and knowledge for success. Comprehending the course’s expectations renders the criteria more attainable and less overwhelming.

Most of my anxiety at this stage stemmed from assumptions rather than actual requirements. Thoroughly reviewing the course webpage and aligning your experiences with the criteria can illustrate that you’re better prepared than you initially thought.

English Language Proficiency Criteria

International applicants should be mindful of the English language proficiency requirements, as you may need to take an exam such as IELTS, depending on where your previous degree was obtained. I didn’t need to take extra tests since I studied in the UK. If you need to meet English language requirements, you can find a list of accepted tests and qualifications on Imperial’s website. Imperial also provides Pre-sessional courses to enhance your academic English and prepare you for your time at Imperial.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn give you a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t stress too much about making your responses flawless!”

Numerous applicants attempt to showcase their experiences flawlessly, but this can lead to answers seeming disingenuous. Your experiences can work to your advantage if framed correctly.

I dedicated ample time to my personal statement, contemplating my long-term career aspirations, reasons for choosing Imperial, and how my previous experiences relate to my future objectives. I documented everything I had accomplished during my undergraduate degree, encompassing modules, projects, societies, and extracurricular pursuits like volunteering. I reflected on my work in data visualization, interest in media and AI, and leadership roles in student organizations. I utilized these experiences as a foundation, directly connecting them to each question rather than making generic claims. For instance, instead of stating ‘I am passionate about data,’ I emphasized specific projects and experiences, detailing how they shaped my interests and ambitions.

Authored by Priyal (India), MSc Business Analytics (Online) If you’re thinking about applying to Imperial, it’s probably a choice you’ve been pondering for some time.
