Nevertheless, the last 18 months spent in London have been the most rewarding and exhilarating of my existence.

London is an energetic, multicultural, historic metropolis offering a vast selection of restaurants, events, and attractions—navigating it is consistently an adventure! However, adjusting to life in a foreign country can pose its challenges. Here are some insights I’ve gained as an international student in London, along with helpful advice on what to pursue once you’re established.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The initial step in relocating to London is identifying the ideal place to call home. I utilized Instagram, TikTok, and online communities to research different neighborhoods in London. I learned about Camden Town’s vibrant nightlife, Hackney’s up-and-coming scene, and Putney’s serene, green residential atmosphere.

Having traveled to London prior to starting my Master’s, I visited these areas physically before deciding on Putney. My roommates (whom I met during my undergraduate studies) and I accessed platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to discover budget-friendly house shares, organized online viewings with property owners, and ultimately located a pleasant apartment close to Putney Heath.

Activities to engage in while in London

Once you’ve made yourself at home, a plethora of opportunities and events await—deciding which ones to participate in and finding the time for them can be the actual challenge!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is situated in the Albertopolis region, an area dedicated to celebrating art, manufacturing, and science. Nearby are incredible museums like the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These institutions are delightful to visit, and several of them even extend their hours on Fridays. On the last Friday of every month, the V&A throws a V&A Late, transforming the museum into a small rave featuring drinks and live performances!

Apart from museums, I take pleasure in exploring East London locales such as Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. The area is rich in historical gems and creative endeavors, making it a wonderful place to stroll. My favorite location is Trinity Buoy Wharf—established on a former canning warehouse, it now serves as home to a startup that creates temporary structures from shipping containers. It celebrates innovative manufacturing and houses several art studios, including the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday conducted his work!

Dining out in London

London presents great deals for those who know where to seek them, featuring numerous options for tasty yet budget-friendly food. During my stay, I’ve compiled a list of dining establishments across the city offering various deals, making eating out more economical.

One notable location is found in South Kensington, where Wright Brothers provides an Oyster Happy Hour featuring oysters for only £1 each! It’s an excellent bargain, especially for those yearning for the taste of seafood from home.

Tooting in South London is also well-regarded for its culinary diversity. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are extensive indoor street food venues offering an array of cuisines. If you’re in search of food that evokes memories of home, I highly encourage you to explore the food markets in Tooting!

Escaping the city

While London’s urban pace contributes to its allure, there are times when the Tube can become overwhelmingly loud or the streets too congested. Thankfully, London is at the heart of a robust network of trains and coaches, making it convenient to escape the city for a weekend getaway.

My preferred destinations include Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town in southern England, rich in historical significance and accommodating spots for students. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) boasts an extensive botanical garden in Wisley, perfect for a summer outing.

In summary, London is a dynamic city brimming with opportunities and places to uncover, so take your time to explore all it has to offer during your journey at Imperial!

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

<p

Authored by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics Making the decision to relocate from the rural landscape of a Spanish island to the largest city in Europe was intimidating.
