Each exploration feels like a new adventure! However, adapting to life in a foreign country can present its challenges. Here are some insights I gained as an international student in London, along with some suggestions on what to do once you’ve settled in.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The initial step in relocating to London involves finding the ideal place to call home. I utilized Instagram, TikTok, and online forums to investigate different neighborhoods in London. Camden Town is renowned for its nightlife, Hackney is emerging as a vibrant area, and Putney is a serene, green residential district.

Having visited London prior to commencing my Master’s program, I explored these neighborhoods firsthand before choosing Putney. My flatmates (who I met during my undergraduate studies) and I made use of platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to locate budget-friendly house shares, organized online viewings, and ultimately secured a lovely flat near Putney Heath.

Activities to enjoy in London

Once you’ve settled in, London provides limitless opportunities and events. The difficulty lies in selecting which activities to engage in and making time for them all!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is situated in Albertopolis, a district that celebrates art, industry, and science. Close by, you’ll discover the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These museums are wonderful to visit, and a few even have late hours on Fridays. On the final Friday of each month, the V&A hosts a V&A Late, transforming the museum into a vibrant gathering with drinks and live music!

In addition to museums, I love exploring East London areas such as Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. These neighborhoods are rich in historical and artistic treasures. One of my favorite places is Trinity Buoy Wharf, established on a former canning warehouse. It now hosts a startup that creates temporary structures from shipping containers and features several art studios, including the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday worked!

Dining out in London

London boasts numerous affordable dining choices if you know where to seek them out. I’ve put together a list of eateries offering excellent deals throughout the city.

One such venue is Wright Brothers in South Kensington, which provides an Oyster Happy Hour with oysters priced at just £1 each! It’s an incredible bargain, especially if you’re yearning for seafood from home.

Tooting in South London is also celebrated for its culinary scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market showcase a diverse array of cuisines. If you’re in search of food that brings back memories of home, I highly suggest venturing into these markets!

Taking a breather from the city

While London’s vibrancy contributes to its allure, the city can sometimes feel overwhelming. Thankfully, London’s outstanding train and coach network makes it simple to escape for a weekend.

My preferred retreats are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town in southern England, rich in history and accommodating for students. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden in Wisley makes for a delightful day trip, especially during the summer.

All in all, London is a lively city brimming with opportunities and places to discover. Take your time to experience everything it has to offer during your stay at Imperial!

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Things to do in London

Tagged <a href="https://blogs

Authored by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics Transitioning from a rural island in Spain to Europe’s largest metropolis was intimidating, but the last 18 months in London have proven to be remarkably fulfilling and enjoyable.
