Nevertheless, adjusting to life in a new country can pose challenges. Here are some insights I gained as an international student in London, along with tips on what you can do once you’ve settled in.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate

The initial step in relocating to London involves finding the ideal place to call your own. I utilized Instagram, TikTok, and online forums to research various London neighborhoods that could provide a pleasant living experience. I found Camden Town’s lively nightlife, Hackney’s up-and-coming scene, and Putney’s serene, green residential atmosphere.

Having visited London prior to starting my Master’s, I inspected these neighborhoods in person before deciding on Putney. My flatmates (whom I met during my undergraduate studies) and I used platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to look for budget-friendly house shares, scheduled online viewings with landlords, and found a wonderful flat close to Putney Heath.

Activities in London

Once you’ve settled, a plethora of opportunities and events awaits you—the difficulty lies in deciding which activities to pursue and finding time for them in London!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is situated in Albertopolis, a district that honors art, industry, and science. Close by, you will discover the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These museums are fantastic to visit, and some even have extended hours on Fridays. On the last Friday of each month, the V&A organizes a V&A Late, turning the museum into a vibrant gathering with beverages and live performances!

Apart from museums, I enjoy wandering through East London neighborhoods like Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. The area is brimming with historical and artistic treasures. My favorite location is Trinity Buoy Wharf, constructed on an old canning warehouse, currently housing a startup that designs temporary structures from shipping containers. It serves as a hub for creative manufacturing, accommodating art studios and the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday worked!

Dining out in London

London provides excellent dining deals if you are aware of where to search. I’ve compiled a list of budget-friendly eateries throughout the city.

One such establishment is in South Kensington, where Wright Brothers presents an Oyster Happy Hour featuring oysters at only £1 each—ideal for seafood aficionados feeling nostalgic for home!

Tooting in South London is renowned for its food culture. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are expansive indoor street food marketplaces showcasing a variety of cuisines. If you are in search of meals reminiscent of home, be sure to explore Tooting’s food markets!

Escaping the city

While London’s lively pace contributes to its allure, the Tube and bustling streets can sometimes feel overwhelming. Luckily, London’s excellent train and coach network facilitates easy weekend getaways.

My preferred retreats are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town in southern England rich in history and student-friendly venues. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Wisley garden makes for a delightful summer day trip.

Ultimately, London is a dynamic city filled with limitless opportunities and places to discover. Take your time to unveil all it has to offer while you’re at Imperial!

For more on my experiences, read my Imperial tale.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Things to do in London

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/living-in-london/"

Authored by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics Transitioning from a rural island in Spain to the largest city in Europe was intimidating, yet the last 18 months spent in London have been the most rewarding and exhilarating of my existence.
