Nevertheless, the year and a half since my relocation to London has been the most rewarding and thrilling period of my existence.

London is a dynamic, multicultural, historic, and lively city offering a plethora of restaurants, events, and attractions – each exploration is an exciting journey! However, adapting to life in a new country can prove to be a hurdle. Here are some insights I gained while transitioning to London as an international student, alongside tips and recommendations for once you’ve settled.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The first task in moving to London is identifying the ideal space to call your own. By utilizing Instagram, TikTok, and various online forums, I explored different neighborhoods in London that could be enjoyable places to reside. I found that Camden Town boasts a lively nightlife, Hackney is an up-and-coming area in east London, and Putney offers a tranquil and green residential environment.

I had the chance to visit London prior to commencing my Master’s program, which enabled me to personally explore these neighborhoods before making a decision on where to live. After opting for Putney, my flatmates (whom I met during my undergraduate studies) and I utilized accommodation websites like SpareRoom and Rightmove to find reasonably priced house shares, arranged online viewings with landlords, and ultimately secured a lovely flat near Putney Heath.

Activities in London

Once you’ve settled in and adorned your new dwelling, a treasure trove of opportunities and events awaits – the challenge in London lies in selecting which activities to engage in and allocating time for everything!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is situated in the Albertopolis district, a sprawling area dedicated to celebrating art, manufacturing, and science. Close by, you’ll find several remarkable museums, such as the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These museums are fantastic to visit, and some even extend their hours on Friday evenings. On the last Friday of each month, the V&A hosts a V&A Late, an open gathering where the museum morphs into a small party featuring drinks and live music!

In addition to visiting museums, I relish wandering through East London neighborhoods like Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. This area is rich with historical and artistic endeavors, creating a wonderful environment to meander and uncover surprising sights. My favorite location is Trinity Buoy Wharf – built on the site of an old canning warehouse, it now accommodates a Series B startup that constructs temporary structures from shipping containers. The complex honors creative manufacturing and is home to several art studios, including the original lighthouse lab where renowned English chemist and physicist Michael Faraday conducted his work!

Dining out in London

London is filled with numerous deals if you know where to search, with a myriad of options for delicious yet budget-friendly meals. Throughout my time in London, I’ve compiled an extensive list of eateries offering various promotions throughout the city, making it easier to dine out.

One such place is located in South Kensington, where a fantastic seafood establishment called Wright Brothers runs an Oyster Happy Hour, letting you savor oysters for just £1 each! This is an exceptional deal, particularly if you long for the taste of fresh seafood from home and wish to indulge in oysters to your heart’s (and budget’s) delight!

Tooting in South London is equally renowned for its culinary scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are expansive indoor street food markets featuring a diverse array of cuisines. If you’re in search of flavors reminiscent of home, I highly recommend checking out the food markets in Tooting!

Escaping the city

While the hustle and bustle of the city is part of London’s allure, there are moments when the Tube feels overwhelmingly loud, or the streets become excessively crowded. Thankfully, London is at the center of an excellent network of trains and coaches, making it remarkably easy to get away for a weekend.

My preferred getaway destinations are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a charming medieval town in southern England, abundant in history and student-friendly locations. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) boasts a large botanical garden in Wisley, which makes for a delightful day out, especially during the summer months.

In summary, London is a vibrant city brimming with opportunities and areas to discover, so take the time to experience everything the city has to offer while you study at Imperial!

For more information about my experiences, <a href="https://www

Authored by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics The choice to move from the serene countryside of a rural Spanish island to the largest city in Europe was intimidating.
