Its exploration is perpetually an adventure! Nonetheless, adjusting to life in a different country can present challenges. Below are some insights I gained as an international student in London, along with a few tips and recommendations for adapting.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The initial step in relocating to London is identifying the perfect place to establish as home. I utilized Instagram, TikTok, and various online forums to investigate different London neighborhoods. I discovered Camden Town’s lively nightlife, Hackney’s burgeoning scene, and Putney’s serene, green residential area.

Having toured London prior to commencing my Master’s, I personally examined these neighborhoods before opting for Putney. My flatmates (whom I met during my undergraduate studies) and I employed platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to locate budget-friendly house shares, arranged virtual viewings with landlords, and secured a lovely flat near Putney Heath.

Activities to engage in London

Once you’ve made yourself comfortable, a vast array of opportunities and events lies ahead. The difficulty lies in selecting which activities to engage in and allocating time for them all!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is located in the Albertopolis area, which pays homage to art, manufacturing, and science. Close by are remarkable museums such as the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and V&A Museum, some of which extend their hours on Fridays. The V&A even hosts a monthly event known as V&A Late, which turns the museum into a vibrant celebration featuring drinks and live music!

In addition to museums, I take pleasure in exploring East London neighborhoods like Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. These locations are steeped in history and artistic initiatives, making them ideal for uncovering hidden treasures. My favorite location is Trinity Buoy Wharf, a creative space founded on a former canning warehouse, now hosting a startup that fabricates temporary structures from shipping containers. It also accommodates art studios and the original lighthouse laboratory where Michael Faraday conducted his experiments!

Dining out in London

London boasts fantastic food deals if you know where to search. I’ve assembled a list of eateries featuring specials throughout the city, making dining out more economical.

One recommended place is in South Kensington, where Wright Brothers provides an Oyster Happy Hour with oysters priced at just £1 each. It’s an excellent bargain, particularly if you long for the flavors of home seafood!

Tooting in South London is renowned for its food scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are expansive indoor street food markets showcasing a range of cuisines. If you’re in search of food that evokes home, I wholeheartedly suggest delving into Tooting’s food markets!

Taking a respite from the city

Although London’s urban tempo is part of its appeal, occasionally the Tube can become too raucous or the streets too congested. Thankfully, London is well-served by trains and coaches, making it simple to escape for a weekend getaway.

My preferred destinations are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town located in southern England, rich in history and student-friendly establishments. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society’s expansive botanical garden in Wisley offers a charming day out, particularly during the summer months.

Ultimately, London is a dynamic city brimming with opportunities and places to discover. Take your time to explore all that the city presents during your tenure at Imperial!

If you wish to learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Things to do in London

Tagged <a

Authored by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics Transitioning from a rural island in Spain to the largest city in Europe was overwhelming, yet the last 18 months in London have been the most rewarding and thrilling experiences of my life.
