Nevertheless, the last 18 months spent in London have been the most rewarding and enjoyable of my existence.

London is a lively, multicultural, and historic metropolis filled with a variety of restaurants, events, and sights—discovering it is always an adventure! However, acclimating to life in a different country can be tough. Here are some insights I gained as an international student in London, along with advice on how to establish yourself.

Relocating to London as a graduate student

The initial step in moving to London is securing the perfect place to call home. By utilizing Instagram, TikTok, and online forums, I investigated different areas of London. I unearthed Camden Town’s vibrant nightlife, Hackney’s burgeoning scene, and Putney’s tranquil, green residential atmosphere.

Having been to London prior to beginning my Master’s, I toured these neighborhoods in person before selecting Putney. My flatmates (from my undergraduate studies) and I utilized websites like SpareRoom and Rightmove to locate budget-friendly house shares, arranged online viewings, and found a lovely flat near Putney Heath.

Activities to enjoy in London

After settling in, a plethora of opportunities is at your disposal—selecting from the myriad activities in London and incorporating them into your timetable is the real challenge!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is located in the Albertopolis district, which celebrates the arts, manufacturing, and scientific pursuits. Nearby are fantastic museums such as the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and V&A Museum. These museums are lovely to explore, with some open late on Fridays. The V&A holds a V&A Late on the last Friday of each month, transforming the museum into a celebration with drinks and live music!

In addition to museums, I love exploring East London areas such as Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. This region is steeped in history and artistic initiatives, ideal for uncovering hidden treasures. My favorite spot is Trinity Buoy Wharf, situated on a former canning warehouse site, now home to a startup that creates temporary structures from shipping containers. It champions creative manufacturing and houses art studios, including the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday conducted his work!

Dining out in London

London provides great deals if you know where to search, with many choices for affordable, delicious food. I’ve compiled a list of eateries with discounts throughout the city, making dining out more budget-friendly.

One spot in South Kensington is Wright Brothers, which features an Oyster Happy Hour with oysters priced at £1 each—a fantastic deal if you crave seafood from home!

Tooting in South London is also famous for its culinary scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are expansive indoor street food markets offering a myriad of cuisines. If you’re looking for food that evokes memories of home, be sure to check out Tooting’s food markets!

Escaping the city

While the lively rhythm of London is delightful, at times the Tube can be overly noisy or the streets excessively crowded. Thankfully, London boasts excellent transport links via trains and coaches, making weekend getaways a breeze.

My preferred destinations are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town in southern England, steeped in history and offering plenty of student-friendly venues. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society’s expansive botanical garden in Wisley is an excellent summer day trip.

In summary, London is a dynamic city brimming with opportunities and locales to explore, so take your time to experience all it has to offer during your stay at Imperial!

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Things to do in London

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/living-in

Authored by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics The decision to relocate from a rural island in Spain to the largest city in Europe was intimidating.
