Transitioning from a rural island in Spain to the largest city in Europe was intimidating, but the last 18 months in London have proven to be immensely fulfilling and enjoyable.<\/p>\n

London is a lively, diverse metropolis steeped in history and home to an extensive range of restaurants, events, and attractions. Discovering the city is always a thrilling experience, though adapting to life in a different country can pose difficulties. Here are some insights I gained as an international student in London, along with suggestions for what to do once you\u2019re settled in.<\/p>\n

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The initial step in relocating to London is securing a space to call your own. I utilized Instagram, TikTok, and online communities to delve into various neighborhoods. Camden Town is famous for its nightlife, Hackney is rapidly emerging, and Putney is a serene, green area.<\/p>\n

Having previously visited London before embarking on my Master\u2019s, I personally explored these neighborhoods before selecting Putney. My flatmates and I used platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to source affordable house shares, arranged online viewings, and eventually discovered a lovely flat close to Putney Heath.<\/p>\n

Activities in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019ve settled in, a realm of possibilities lies ahead. The difficulty lies in deciding which events to engage in and finding the time for them all!<\/p>\n

Imperial\u2019s South Kensington Campus is positioned in the Albertopolis region, which hosts a variety of museums such as the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These museums are wonderful to explore, and some remain open late on Fridays. The V&A even organizes a monthly V&A Late with beverages and live music!<\/p>\n

In addition to museums, I love wandering through East London locales like Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. These areas are steeped in history and creativity. My favorite place is Trinity Buoy Wharf, a creative space with art studios and the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday conducted his work.<\/p>\n

Dining out in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

London has a plethora of affordable dining options if you know where to seek them. I’ve curated a list of eateries with fantastic deals throughout the city.<\/p>\n

One notable spot is Wright Brothers in South Kensington, which features an Oyster Happy Hour with oysters at \u00a31 each. It\u2019s a fantastic bargain, particularly if you long for the taste of home seafood.<\/p>\n

Tooting in South London is also celebrated for its culinary scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market showcase a diverse range of cuisines. If you\u2019re in search of food that brings you a taste of home, these markets are worth exploring!<\/p>\n

Escaping the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While London\u2019s vibrancy contributes to its appeal, there are times when the city may feel overwhelming. Fortunately, London boasts excellent train and coach services for convenient weekend getaways.<\/p>\n

My preferred destinations are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town with a rich heritage and student-friendly amenities. In Surrey, the RHS Wisley garden is a delightful excursion, especially during the summer.<\/p>\n

All in all, London is a dynamic city brimming with opportunities and places to explore. Take the time to uncover everything it has to offer while you\u2019re at Imperial!<\/p>\n
