Before you start looking for a PhD, it\u2019s important to discern your motivations for pursuing one. A PhD is a significant commitment, and it must resonate with your aspirations and interests. It prepares you to become an autonomous researcher, a capability I deem vital for my career trajectory.<\/p>\n

I was drawn to the autonomy and innovation present in academia. My enthusiasm for science diminishes when I engage with unexciting topics, so I selected a PhD project that truly piqued my interest. The opportunity to lead my project is a significant advantage and one of my preferred elements of undertaking a PhD.<\/p>\n

Think about compiling a pros and cons list regarding pursuing a PhD to confirm that it\u2019s the right choice for you. What do you hope to gain from a PhD?<\/p>\n

The PhD application journey<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The application journey typically includes several phases:<\/p>\n

  3. Shortlisting candidates<\/li>\n
  4. Conducting interviews<\/li>\n
  5. Receiving conditional or formal offers<\/li>\n

    Interviews often center on your motivations, comprehension of the project, previous research experience, and your approach to overcoming obstacles. I prepared by reviewing my application, perusing relevant literature, and reflecting on my experiences to articulate them confidently during interviews.<\/p>\n

      As a Master\u2019s student at Imperial, I also reached out to lecturers about appropriate research groups. I found my supervisor through a list given by my MSc course leader.<\/p>\n
