I was set to embark on my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy self was familiar with. Looking back, I realize I’ve experienced a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks among the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, this might be your top worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual chats with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? It’s advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, there’s no need to stress! There will be ample ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your mindset.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the content. I noticed a significant increase from A-levels, and even more starkly from the first term to the second. Being in such a demanding environment can impact your confidence; observing others studying might lead you to feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through this, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same path. If you struggle to grasp a concept, chances are others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and staff!

This brings me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are attuned to the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and engage in ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking chances—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the support that’s available. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this past year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and submission deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) A decade ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead.
