I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved nature was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was socializing. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, far too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, though, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some remarkable friends here at this university and in my program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who align with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your self-confidence; you may see others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is facing the same circumstances. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek support from peers and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position facilitated my connection with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My central message is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated with the support from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone, and I’ve discovered how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about my future.
