I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it could be one of your major worries. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in light conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that it’s always wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate your connections with others. I’ve also realized that, if you can be anything, just be yourself. With so many varied individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was certainly an upgrade from A-levels, and in some respects, an even bigger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. A few factors aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others do not either. Therefore, seek help. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for assistance!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking leaps – I took a significant step at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s definitely one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering Nine months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future.
