I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day locked away in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with small exchanges with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also came to understand that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and campus, you’re bound to find kindred spirits.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might see others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are struggling with it as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to achieve success and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep us updated throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to utilize the support extended to you. You can never have an excess of help!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, afraid, and uncertain about what lay ahead.
