Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and fun. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?<\/p>\n

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often a major worry for new university students. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step outside and interact. Now, I can proudly say I\u2019ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and in my program. I\u2019ve found a second family at Imperial, all beginning with brief conversations with others in comparable situations. The takeaway? Make an effort at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, don\u2019t stress\u2014there are numerous ice-breakers and activities to assist you in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you will encounter like-minded individuals.<\/p>\n

Another obstacle was the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It\u2019s simple to feel inadequate when others appear to understand concepts quickly. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it\u2019s likely unclear to others as well. Don\u2019t hesitate to ask for assistance\u2014it\u2019s essential to learn this during your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!<\/p>\n

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They consistently communicate regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with staff\u2014a valuable experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it\u2019s one of the best steps you can take for yourself. Utilize the resources available to you\u2014you can\u2019t have too much support!<\/p>\n

This year has shown me that apprehensions about university are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the help available from both staff and fellow students. I\u2019ve realized I\u2019m never isolated and have learned how to enjoy myself despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.<\/p>\n
