Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?<\/p>\n

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you\u2019re a potential student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assuredly state that I\u2019ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here at university and within my course. I\u2019ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It\u2019s advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you\u2019re not prepared or comfortable, don\u2019t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you\u2019re sure to find like-minded peers.<\/p>\n

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you may feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are struggling with it too. So, don\u2019t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek support from both classmates and faculty!<\/p>\n

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which offered me a chance to connect with the staff, a precious opportunity. There are numerous ways to interact with the faculty, and it\u2019s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My key takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never receive too much help!<\/p>\n

In summary, this year has shown me that apprehensive feelings about university are frequently unfounded and can be diminished with the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I\u2019m never alone and how to enjoy my time despite the stress stemming from exams and deadlines.<\/p>\n
