I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making connections. This is frequently one of the most pressure-filled parts of embarking on university life, and if you’re a prospective student, this might be one of your top worries. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day indoors, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? I’ve found that taking risks at the year’s outset is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking events and gatherings to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and at the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a scenario can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that emotion, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for support!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They resonate with students and keep us informed throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referred earlier to taking chances – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s certainly among the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are usually unjustified and can be alleviated thanks to the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised as Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
