I was on the brink of starting my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the most significant and daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university life, and if you’re a future student reading this, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can confidently declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual chats with individuals in similar circumstances to mine. So, what’s the lesson? I’ve realized that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will help you engage with others. I’ve also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best initiatives you can take for yourself! My main insight from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the myriad of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future.
