I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly what my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and for those reading this as potential students, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, far too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and throughout this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals facing similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentically yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes dampen your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is grappling with similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek support from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face difficulties. They empathize with our struggles and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, though I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with staff, and that’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for your own development! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the various support systems offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
