I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was making acquaintances. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my very first day of moving into my housing, a few days before the semester began, I spent the whole day confined to my room because I felt too anxious to step out and greet others. Sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve found that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the start of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you connect with others. I’ve also realized that if you can choose to be one thing, let it be yourself. There are various kinds of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the amount of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the affirmation that we’re all in the same situation. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are several others who are also struggling. Therefore, seeking assistance is crucial. This may be the single most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and your instructors!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They connect with us continuously throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

On a broader level, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated through the many support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come.
