I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a whole lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most challenging aspects when beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve created some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I learn? It’s crucial to take risks at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded peers.

Another significant challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can influence your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me through this, one being the reminder that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something is challenging for you, it’s likely difficult for others too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students endure. They relate to our concerns and maintain ongoing dialogue concerning our issues. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it is one of the most beneficial actions you can take! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the available support. You can never have an excess of it!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have a good time despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future.
