New experiences were not my forte, but in retrospect, the year proved to be rich in personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial hurdles was forging friendships, which can be intimidating for newcomers to university life. On my first day in my accommodation, I remained in my room, feeling apprehensive about interacting with new faces. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best bonds here, creating a second family at Imperial. The essential takeaway? Embrace opportunities at the year’s outset. If you’re not prepared, there will be ice-breakers and events designed to assist. Be authentic, and you’re bound to meet those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the increased workload and the complexity of the material, which escalated compared to A-levels, particularly from the first to the second term. This can affect your confidence, but keep in mind that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something isn’t clear to you, it likely isn’t for others as well. Seek assistance from fellow students and faculty; it’s vital in your first year.

The faculty in Materials are understanding and compassionate, actively engaging in discussions regarding student concerns. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until late in the academic year, yet I wish I had done so sooner. I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with the faculty. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with them, and it proves to be advantageous. Utilize the support available; you can never receive too much help!

This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are generally misplaced and can be alleviated with the support of both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never isolated and can still have a good time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Flash back to ten months ago, in October 2022, when I felt anxious and uncertain about embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student.
