I was on the verge of starting my undergraduate journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is surely one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your top worries. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Sitting here today, I can say with certainty that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always ideal. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in making connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even bigger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can often challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being offered. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
