I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t familiar to my previously timid and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what knowledge have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most daunting obstacles was establishing friendships. This certainly stands out as one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling uneasy or unprepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking occasions and activities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody any trait, be yourself. There are so many diverse individuals in the course and university; you’ll inevitably find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly an increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance that’s being extended to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be eased by the wide array of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
