I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I observe a journey characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, feeling too shy to leave and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with people in similar situations. So, what did I gain? I learned that taking an initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few things aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something doesn’t make sense, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel likewise. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellness representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never acquire too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Classified under Unclassified

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future.
