I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, mere days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that it’s always wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a broad spectrum of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently unsubstantiated and can be mitigated by the myriad support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to have a good time amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
